The Fathala Wildlife Reserve in Senegal is about 35 miles from Banjul in The Gambia.
To get to the 6000 acre reserve, our bus had to cross the Gambia River by ferry and then traverse
both The Gambia and Senegal immigration systems.
After traveling 3.5hr from Banjul, we finally arrived at the wildlife reserve.
While their website describes lions, none were present currently; but the website
does describe a dedicated 40-45 min guided walk with lions- likely in a separate enclosure
not available to our short tour. Of the 2 rhinos, only
one was still alive; but we were unable to sight it during ~2hr drive
in a 22-person safari vehicle. One learned lesson is to not board such a large
truck and not sit so close to the rear wheel. The crowded truck also did not enable
good 360-degree views either.
Antelope
Giant Derby Eland antelope: Note the wound on the rear leg
Giraffes
Zebras. The zebra in the first picture may be pregnant? (pic was
taken by Bob since he was on that side of the truck).
After the tour ended, I found a few birds. It would have been nice to spent
more time looking for the many bird species that are known to reside in the area.
